Name: Rob Anderson
Hometown: Ann Arbor, MI
Playing experience and other experience that lead you to where you are now:
I’ve been a member of the PGA since 2011. I attended a golf management program in Florida and have worked in the golf business as a club fitter ever since.
What is a “day in the life of a fitter” at your location like?
Give people a Perfect Fit. , Follow-up on my customer orders. Build and repair clubs. More customer follow up. Grow the brand. Make a difference.
How many years of fitting experience do you have?
What is your Fitting philosophy?
Build a golf club for the player that allows them to generate the most ball speed without sacrificing accuracy and control.
What do you love most about what you do?
Working with different types of players and helping people improve.
What do you see as the biggest challenges and biggest opportunities for custom fitting?
I think if more players knew the benefit of being custom fit and the impact it can have on their game, more players would do it. With so many core golfers playing equipment not properly fit for their game, I think there is a huge opportunity for custom fitting in the business. Just takes time.
What would you tell someone who asked “why should I get custom fit for golf clubs?
Being custom fit for clubs is similar to buying shoes, or clothes. One size does not simply fit all. To get the most out of your game and to play your best everyone should be custom fit for their clubs based on a number of different variables including clubhead speed, launch angle, spin rate, smash factor and ball speed to name a few.
What are your thoughts on the shaft being referred to as “the engine of the club?
I completely agree with this statement. The golf shaft is responsible for so much in how a club performs. While the right shaft can add distance and better accuracy, the wrong shaft can cost you distance and hurt your dispersion.
What are some common misconceptions golfers have when they come in and how do you respond to those?
A common misconception that I face is players thinking you have to be a scratch handicap to benefit from being custom fit. Although everyone will benefit from being custom fit, in my experience the higher handicapper and beginners seem to gain more than a scratch player because the better player is going to be able to compensate better for poorly fit equipment than a beginner or high handicapper.
What do you like most about Fujikura shafts compared to other shaft options available on the market?
I like Fujikura because they offer a wide variety of shafts designed to fit almost any player. This makes my job as a fitter easier because it allows me to more accurately and efficiently fit my players.
Do you have any “famous fits” or good stories you can share with us?
I recently worked with a former D-1 player and state champion. Over the years he lost a lot of golf time to family and his career. When he got back in the game his clubs were outdated and he lost almost all of his distance. After a driver and iron fit I was able to recover almost all of his distance and then some. He’s now playing better now than he did in his college days and couldn’t be happier. This is why I love doing what I do.
